Spain banked on substitute Ferran Torres' gutsy extra-time strike to seal a 1-0 victory over defending champion Argentina and notch its second Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup title at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 20 (PHT).
Torres scored the lone goal in the 106th minute, hammering a left-footed half-volley through the flailing arms of Dibu Martinez after Nico Williams' crucial header that kept the ball in play from a Pedro Porro outswinging cross.
"It was a goal scored by 47 million people," the 26-year old forward stated.
Lionel Messi desperately tried to spark one last resurgence for La Albiceleste.
With about four minutes left before the final whistle that spark lit a golden chance for Argentina, Messi took a corner kick for an equalizer and the ball took a fortunate skip toward Giuliano Simeone who sent the ball over the post.
That was the only attack Argentina could execute as the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner could not conjure any magic against a dominant La Roja.
The Spaniards denied Argentina its second straight World Cup while capturing their second World Cup title after a 16-year-long wait.
