There is a strange loneliness in hearing your own voice return to you.
I call into the distance, reaching for someone who may be there. At first, my voice is soft as a feather, testing the air. Then it grows louder, hoping that somewhere, somehow, someone will answer. But all that comes back as only an echo: my own voice, repeating what I said. Not another voice. Not the one I long for. Just mine, returning to me instead of hearing him again.
I find myself back at school, seated in the blue chair by the window, my eyes drifting toward you near the door. Day after day, I become mesmerized by your gentle voice, something that soothes me like a lullaby when storms rage inside my head. I can still remember your faint vanilla scent, how it seemed to carry warmth toward me, even though I could never truly reach you in the way lovers do. I convinced myself that the quiet between us was not absence, but hesitation. Maybe, if I kept calling, your heart would one day learn how to answer mine.
So I kept loving,
I kept waiting,
And I kept speaking.
The echo of my voice grew familiar. It felt like proof that something still existed, that my love had not vanished into nothingness. Even if the echo was not you, it was still something. It meant my love was real, written into every word and every trembling line I carried inside me. And so I became stubborn. After all, what could go wrong when hope refuses to die? What could go wrong when you love someone too deeply, even when they cannot love you back? What could go wrong when you simply wait?
But echoes never become authentic voices.
One day, the silence stopped feeling gentle. It struck me with a sharp truth: maybe you were never meant for me. Your face still lingered in my mind, your voice still lived in my memory, but love cannot be forced into bloom. It cannot grow from persistence alone. Because even if I tried, even if I confessed, your heart had already chosen another. A heart does not answer because it is called; it answers because it chooses to.
And yours did not choose me.
So I learned to step away, to let the sound fade into the distance. Even when I wanted to stay, I knew I would only be speaking into empty air. My heart still remembers your voice at night, but I know now that my love will never be received. It will always remain an echo. And though that love was real, though it was never meaningless, it deserves somewhere real to belong, and I know that place is not with you.
Letting go does not silence what I felt. It does not mean I loved you less. I loved you in nights when the memories still carried your scent, when I could almost feel the warmth of your hand, when your voice lived softly inside my thoughts. Releasing my voice from spaces that could never hold it does not erase the nights I hoped. It only frees the echoes within me.
Sometimes, those echoes may return, in memories where I admired you from afar, your face etched gently in my mind, and in songs that remind me of everything I never said. In the truth that I never found the courage to confess, and all those unspoken words become nothing more than echoes. But they remind me that once, there was a time that I loved you.
And in the end, I chose to walk forward into a silence that finally answers me truthfully rather than remain inside echoes that only offered false hope. But even those echoes mattered.
Because they gave me hope once,
And they proved that I loved, and that love, even unreturned, was real.
