LITERARY | The Demon She Loathes
Shadows dancing along the flickering lights,
Heart’s been racing as she prance away from
what’s been hunting her down,
It’s not a wolf, not a beast, but her demon—
The demon that devours her body
whom she sees as skin and bones
but sometimes as a body of mass.

The people adored her with their praises
and sweet nothings:
“You’re beautiful, dear,”
“I love your body,”
And she smiled, she acknowledged,
But when the night engulfed and
darkness loomed over—
A demon’s roar erupted her solitude
as she stared at the mirror—
naked, vulnerable, and loathsome.

No one knew she had a demon within her,
With gnashing pointy teeth
that consumes the entirety of her body
Like a madman, like a god deprived
of pleasure.

With eyes staring at her own reflection,
All she saw was a body of a monster—
A she-devil that possessed the sordid
truths of her own flesh.

Her dilated pupils gazed at the demon
that made her detest the body
she owns—
It gawked at her, criticized her flaws
hauntingly.

These truths were now etched into
the annals of her mind,
whispering to her like a menace.

Her breathing became ragged as she
speaks a mantra that excites the demon,
With aching fingers, she scratch and carve
her nails deep into her flesh
As she wanted to be away from the demon.

She wanted to carve herself out
from this body that haunts her.

And so, as blood pooled under her feet and
with her body full of bruises—she realized
that her demon was her own
hatred towards her body.

The demon’s words still echoes and
she was left gasping for air
and gaping at the misery she created.
