As December falls, the long-awaited season of Misa de Aguinaldo excites many—especially for Filipino Catholics. Several people look forward to completing the 9-nights streak of it that serves as a spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ; however, for some, especially amongst teenagers, their objective is to complete it to have their wishes fulfilled. Whether it may be about the longing for a permanent lovelife, a better grade this new semester, a new job, house, or a car, we all run to Him because we believe that our dreams will be fulfilled according to His plans for us.
Although there is nothing wrong if your goal is as shallow as the surface for others—as long as you participate respectfully in the sacred activity, there should be no issues at all. Yet, it becomes foolish as it goes the other way around. Attending the sacred mass was like attending a damn party. Short skirts, scoop neck tops, jorts, and slippers are what I commonly see worn by most people. It’s ironic that this act is somewhat persistent despite our local churches having several reminders of appropriate clothing. While you treat it like a fashion show, it is too far from being appropriate to be at the Lord’s sanctuary.
What makes it even ridiculous is that most big friend groups occupy the seats in front just to gossip with each other. Before, during, and even after. They have no limitations at all—when and where. And what I hate mostly is that they don’t learn how to be sensitive in their community. They are aware, I believe, that they are being a distraction to their surroundings yet are still consistent with this impolite behaviour. It is satirical to think that it is those devoted followers are the ones standing in any corners of the parish as seatings are all
occupied.
How can our desires be gratified if we don't practice His teachings accordingly? Because even the simplest human decency we failed to embody. Maybe we should look at ourselves first in the mirror and reflect upon our actions these past few days. Since that is what Misa de Gallo should be about: a time of silence to have our moment of reflection and faith. If we are too focused on the physical matter, how can we feed our spiritual needs? Try to understand and digest His teachings as well—not just focusing on picture-worthy of instagram stories.
