SPORTS | THE NEXT YULO: Carlos Sees Olympic Potential in Brother Eldrew

“Malaki talaga yung potential ni Drew makapag‑Olympics, manalo ng medals,” said Olympic champion Carlos Yulo, proudly speaking of his younger brother Karl Eldrew Yulo. The 17‑year-old gymnast recently turned heads by qualifying in four event finals at the 3rd 2025 Junior World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, held November 20–24 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City.

Eldrew’s journey at the Junior Worlds was a mix of triumphs and near‑glories. On Sunday, November 23, he clinched his first world‑level medal: bronze in the floor exercise, scoring 13.733. The following day, he came close to another medal in vault—logging an average score of 13.716, but ultimately finished fourth among eight finalists. Still, he also advanced to the finals in the individual all‑around and horizontal bar, proving his versatility across multiple apparatus.

Carlos, who already knows what it’s like to compete and win on the world’s biggest stages, sees something in Eldrew that goes beyond scores: raw potential. “He has more potential than I did at his age. I truly believe he can make it to the Olympics and bring home medals,” he said, underscoring his faith in his younger brother’s future.

Asked after the competition, an emotional Karl Eldrew Yulo admitted, “I really don’t know what to say because this is not just any competition. It really made me cry. This is just the start of my journey and I know there will be more disappointments and happiness at the same time.”

His older brother, who has himself experienced the pressures and triumphs of Olympic competition, advises his brother to focus while enjoying the experience. “Kung anong tinraining niya, gawin niya lang. Mag-focus lang siya po,” he said, emphasizing the importance of balance in an athlete’s journey, between striving for excellence and savoring every moment of the sport.

Karl Eldrew Yulo’s story is just the beginning. With the guidance of his older brother, the support of his family, and the talent he has demonstrated at the Junior World Championships, Eldrew is poised to become one of the Philippines’ next gymnastics stars. If Carlos’ prediction holds true, the Olympic podium may soon have another Yulo standing tall.
