SPORTS | Solomon strengthens Alas Pilipinas in high-stakes SEA Games Prep

Alyssa Solomon, the rising star opposite spiker fresh from her Japan's SV.League stint, has rejoined Alas Pilipinas Women's Volleyball team as it buckles up for the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.

Despite her ongoing club commitments overseas, Solomon flew back to Manila to participate in the national team's training sessions, giving the squad a timely boost as they seek to end a two-decade medal drought.

National Head Coach Jorge Souza de Brito acknowledged how Solomon's return helps in team build-up, emphasizing the necessity of a better training to go as they prepare to face powerhouse opponents.

“We always hope for a medal finish. They are more motivated by the last results we got, against the teams we know that are going to play—Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia,” said De Brito. “Of course, not talking about confidence. We would like to train much better.”

With several players juggling club leagues, international duties, and school commitments, De Brito exuded a mix of optimism and frustration as the team continues pushing through limited training windows; he urged the public to change the narrative away from the country's chronic preparation issues.

"And I am so sorry because, even if you get the medal, you guys will start a news, 'Even lacking a time of preparation.' This has to stop," he said. "Try to find another way to talk about Alas. Even with a lack of preparation, the players have to find time to prepare."

Solomon's arrival comes at a crucial juncture for Alas Pilipinas, who made strong, punchy showings recently in the tournaments and will now look to passage that momentum into SEA Games success. Her firepower, athleticism, and experience in Japan's professional scene are expected to play a pivotal role in the would-be breakthrough of the team.

As the SEA Games draws near, Solomon and the rest of the national core keep fortifying their chemistry— anticipating this year to finally be the Philippines' comeback to the women's volleyball podium.
