SPORTS | Philippines secures 2028 Asian Beach Games hosting in Cebu

The Philippines has officially secured the hosting rights for the 7th Asian Beach Games on April 27, with Cebu set to welcome Asia’s top beach sports athletes in 2028.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for Philippine sports as the country prepares to hold one of the continent’s premier multi-sport events.

Furthermore, the confirmation came after the formal signing of the host city contract between the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia during a ceremony in Sanya, China.

The agreement solidifies Cebu’s role as the next host following the conclusion of the 2026 edition.

Moreover, Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino expressed optimism about the country’s ability to deliver a successful event, citing the nation’s experience in organizing major international competitions.

"It's part of the government's sports tourism program. So, this is it. We're excited. Will it cause headaches? I don't think so. We're used to hosting big sporting events," said Tolentino.

"The last time we hosted similar, although different, Games was in 2019 during the Manila SEA Games. The SEA Plus YG is a bigger competition because there will be other countries aside from Southeast Asia," he added.

The hosting is also aligned with the government’s push to boost sports tourism and enhance global visibility.

Scheduled for March 2028, the Asian Beach Games will feature a wide range of beach and water-based sports, with organizers preparing a preliminary program of around 24 disciplines, pending final approval.

The Games are expected to draw athletes from across Asia, continuing the tradition of the Asian Beach Games as a major continental sporting spectacle organized by the Olympic Council of Asia.

As preparations begin, all eyes now turn to Cebu, which is poised to deliver a world-class edition of the Asian Beach Games in 2028 and reinforce the Philippines’ position as a capable host on the global sporting stage.
