SPORTS | NU curbs early UST test for No.2 seed in UAAP S88

Not even an initial discrepancy could halt National University’s quest for a top-two superiority.

The Lady Bulldogs fended off the University of Santo Tomas’ opening surge to post a thrilling 19–25, 23–25, 25–18, 25–18, 15–13 win and nab the No. 2 spot in the UAAP S88 women's volleyball on April 22 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

NU quickly ran rampant after dragging the game to a decider as they banked on Sam Cantada back-to-back hits to establish a four-point lead at 10–6.

Refusing to falter, UST countered with a 6–2 rally and forced a 12–all deadlock as eventual double-digit scorer Angge Poyos and Jana Perido drilled crucial spikes.

The tie continued at 13–all, but NU pulled away with a 2–0 upswing behind Poyos’ out-of-bound spike before topping it all off with Vange Alinsug’s game-winning hit.

“I’m very proud, not just of this game, but even the last one. Even when we lost, we gave everything,” NU coach Regine Diego uttered. “From that point, I knew these girls would play their best because we’ve already seen what we’re capable of.

The victory propelled the Lady Bulldogs to a 10–4 slate for second place as they secured a bye to the second round of the ladder format semifinals.

On the other hand, the UST Golden Tigresses ended up with misfortune as they unfortunately dropped to an 8–6 record in the standings.

Arah Panique starred for the National University after reeling off 24 points, while Cantada tallied 20 markers and 17 receptions.

Alinsug and Shaira Jardio also did not disappoint, as the former notched 13 points, while the latter registered 33 excellent receptions and 16 digs.

Meanwhile, Poyos and Reg Jurado shone for the losing side after chipping in massive numbers with 24 and 21 points, respectively.

The National University will test their mettle against the victor of the clash between the Adamson University and the winner of the UST versus Far Eastern University fight.
