Vanie Gandler proved to be a major threat after propelling Cignal Super Spikers past Farm Fresh Foxies in four sets, 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 30-28, to remain undefeated in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference at the Mall of Asia Arena, February 10.
Alas Pilipinas’ outside hitter led the stat sheet with a telling 25 points, including 14 excellent digs, and 15 excellent receptions to help Cignal clinch the top spot with a 3-0 record.
In spite of the big numbers, Gandler stated that her main focus was to help the team seal the win.
“I just think of [how] I can contribute to the team,” Gandler said during the post-game press conference. “So, if I'm in the front row, with scoring, and [when I'm in the] back row, defense. I don't really think of the stats. It's just where else I can help with the team to get this win.
The white-clad squad started the opening frame strong, headlined by Gandler’s cross-court attacks that was then capped off by Jacqueline Acuña’s sneaky drop for a 1-0 lead.
Gandler then continued her heroics after netting 10 points in the second set alone, supported by Gel Cayuna’s quick hit to maintain their momentum with a 26-24 buffer.
Farm Fresh then mounted a fightback in the third set, sparked by Trisha Tubu’s attacks and one ace joined by Royse Tubino’s offensives for a 6-1 advantage early on that continued to force a fourth set, 25-20.
However, Cignal then detached from back-to-back match points after Foxies’ Riri Meneses drawed an error with a service fault in the fourth frame that eventually led to secure the win, 30-28.
Super Spikers is now set to maintain their winning ways as they lock horns with the Nxled Chameleons this February 14, Saturday in the Ynares Center.
