SPORTS | Eala weathers late Linette test, marches into Miami Open Rd of 16

Alex Eala withstood Magda Linette’s stern challenge in the final phase before posting a 6–3, 7–6(2) sweep to reach Round of 16 in the 2026 Miami Open women's singles on March 22 (PH time) at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.

Eala trailed at 5–6 in the 12th game of the second set, but bounced back to force a tiebreak and established a 6–2 advantage before exploiting Linette’s errant forehand reply for the win.

Later, the 20-year-old expressed that patience was crucial during the game, while praising her foe, who put the former in tough positions every time they met.

“I think patience was a very key aspect of how I played today,” she said. “Magda is such a fighter, and every time I played against her, she put me in difficult positions.”

Her win marked the second time she defeated the Polish, following a prior straight-set beating in the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic last January 3.

The Pinay pulled away from a 3–all game deadlock in the onset after capitalizing on a bundle of backhands and Linette’s out-of-bound returns to ignite a 5–3 lead.

She eventually blanked her opponent at 40–0 in the eighth game before securing the opener with a service winner that her counterpart failed to swat down.

The Filipina then opened the second set with a 3–1 edge in the fourth game through her precise returns, topped by a forehand drop to breach the Pole’s blocks.

But Linette locked in.

The Polish ramped up her surge, tying the game at 3–all before pushing the Philippine ace in a 4–5 deficit and later 5–6 as she slotted cross-court strikes.

However, the Pinay banked on backhand winners to create a tiebreak and craft a five-point buffer before benefitting from the Pole’s wayward forehand for the triumph.

Eala aims for a masterful performance against the Qatar TotalEnergies champion Karolína Muchová in the Round of 16.
