Alexandra Eala will face Leylah Fernandez for the first time as they open their campaigns in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix today in Stuttgart, Germany.
The match is scheduled for the late afternoon at the Porsche Arena, depending on the completion of earlier games.
Eala, 20, has been one of the notable risers on tour this season, reaching a career-high No. 29 before dropping to No. 46 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings after the Miami Open. She opened her clay campaign in Linz, advancing to the second round before losing to former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, 6-4, 7-5.
Fernandez, 23, enters as the higher-ranked player at No. 25, with a career-best No. 13. She is best known for her runner-up finish at the US Open in 2021 and has collected five WTA titles. She is coming off a Round-of-16 showing in the Charleston Open.
Eala made the main draw as a late replacement for Qinwen Zheng, who withdrew due to injury.
Both players are left-handed, setting up an interesting matchup as they continue their buildup toward Roland Garros in Paris from May 24 to June 7.
The winner will face either World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini or a qualifier in the second round.
Top players seeing action in the tournament include World No. 2 Elena Rybakina, No. 3 Coco Gauff, No. 4 Iga Świątek, Elina Svitolina, Mirra Andreeva, Karolína Muchová and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
