Despite making history as the first Filipino Men’s Volleyball team to reach the FIVB championship podium, and marking their first win against Egypt, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, Alas Pilipinas finished this season at 19th place, ending their historic debut in the FIVB Championship run as world No. 16 Iran makes a game-losing call, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 23-25, 20-22.
Alas Pilipinas left the stadium with tears in their eyes as Malabunga’s game-winning block turned out to be a game-losing error after a net fault call over Iran.
“Masaya naman ako, actually, pero nanghihinayang lang talaga, sobrang nanghihinayang,” Malabunga said in an interview with OneSports after the game.
“Sobrang nada-down kasi ako eh, kasi akin ‘yun e, ako yung huling ano e, dapat panalo na ‘yun e.”
On the other hand, Alas fans expressed their heartwarming support to the team, some also made fun of the song Multo by Cup of Joe saying that it is also applicable in this situation.
Even with this, Alas Pilipinas showed that the Philippine team also deserved a place in the tournament, bringing our country into the global stage.
