As temperatures surge this summer, the Department of Health (DOH) warns everyone of a rising incidence of heat-related illnesses along with increased risks of animal bites driven by heat-stressed and irritable pets, showing how extreme weather conditions are simultaneously impacting human safety and animal behavior.
DOH underscored that the combination of physical vulnerability and increased animal reactivity makes the current heatwave a significant public safety concern.
For humans, this includes heat exhaustion and the potentially fatal onset of heatstroke.
On the other hand, livestock face increased vulnerability to diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF), revealing how climate stress does not isolate its impacts but instead spreads across species and systems.
These overlapping crises highlight a deeper issue: that human health, animal health, and environmental conditions are not separate concerns but are all fundamentally interconnected.
At the One Health Summit in Europe, experts emphasized that preventing future pandemics will depend on breaking down silos between sectors. It’s important, now more than ever, for doctors, veterinarians, environmental scientists, and policymakers to work together.
Yet despite recurring outbreaks and warnings from experts, responses in the Philippines remain fragmented across sectors, limiting the country's ability to manage complex and climate-driven health threats.
What this ongoing summer pattern ultimately reveals is the urgent need to adopt a One Health approach — one that integrates science, health, and cross-sector collaboration — to better anticipate and respond to the evolving risks made by a
warming climate.
