SCITECH | Medinilla Calansan Finally Unveiled its Beauty

Last February 18, 2026, Scientists and local partners reported a new plant species from the forest of Barangay Eva in Calansan, Apayao. This discovery reminds people the importance of protecting Philippine forests and continuing scientific exploration.

Medinilla Calansan is a freshly discovered bloom flexing translucent petals, cotton-candy pink buds, and neon-tipped stamens like it knows it just dropped.

This plant was discovered in the forest of Barangay Eva, Calansan, Apayao. According to Philippine Star, it was formally described described in the international journal Phytotaxa on Feb. 18, the foundation said. Researchers said they first encountered the plant around November 2023 during a field expedition. It aimed at documenting botanical biodiversity to support the areas nomination as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve, which was granted in July 4, 2024.

This plant has a “small, horn-like protrusions at the base of each leaf blade,” a feature not recorded or known about around Southeast Asia. It is said that it’s about two to three meters in height and bears drooping clusters of white flowers that may blush soft pink as they mature.

Based on the study of Philippine Eagle Foundation, botanists note that Medinilla is a diverse tropical plant group, and Philippines is a center of endemism for the genus. New discoveries have emerged from forests that remain difficult to access and under-surveyed, especially in Northern Luzon.
