As we enter amihan season, the air becomes cooler and drier, which makes it easier for viruses to spread—pushing public and private schools to suspend their classes and shift to modular and online learning. In some areas across the country, they implemented short-term lockdowns for disinfection and health monitoring.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, the flu is a common respiratory illness you get from the influenza virus. It causes symptoms like head and body aches, sore throat, fever, and respiratory symptoms ranging from mild to severe.
For many students, the sudden change back to online learning has been challenging. Parents expressed concerns about workload, internet access, and balancing work while supervising their children at home.
Data from GMA News shows that Quezon City records 2,606 influenza-like illness cases as of November 07, 2025. The figure is 87% higher than the same period last year, when 1,394 cases were recorded, according to Super Radyo dzBB's Allan Gatus.
“Shifting to online learning is quite hard—lalo na’t mas natatambakan ng gawain ang mga students na katulad ko. Mas mainam pa na mag face-to-face at mag-implement na lang ng safety protocols para kahit papaano, maiiwasan pa rin ang mga hawaan,” Matilde Grace Vibar, a student affected by the sudden shift, said.
Overall, the influenza virus is deadly serious. Above all, it also serves as a reminder for many on how public health concerns can disrupt daily life. Shifting to online and modular learning might be a solution, but it also shows the struggles and hardships to adjust for students, teachers, and parents. It’s better to take extra precautions for the sake of your health—such as wearing face masks, washing hands, and distancing yourself from those who already have the virus.
