As a gray curtain of ash slowly replaced the once blue skies of Albay—streets that were once busy and colorful fell quiet, homes left behind, and an uneasy stillness settled over towns.

Since January 7, 2026, Mayon Volcano has been experiencing an effusive eruption—the steady flow of lava down its slopes, though it may appear calmer than explosive eruptions, PHIVOLCS warns that it remains dangerous due to multiple volcanic hazards. As of February 3, 2026, the volcanic activity had continued for over 28 days.

Retreat from Threat

The slow advancing of lava and persistent ashfall forced authorities to order evacuations within the six-kilometer danger zone that was implemented by PHIVOLCS.

Volcanic ash, composed of fine rock and glass particles, poses health risks by irritating the eyes and lungs, contaminating water sources, and reducing visibility, while sulfur dioxide emissions further threaten air quality and indicate continued volcanic activity beneath the volcano.

Evacuation centers filled as residents of Albay prioritized safety, guided by the local governments of the towns present within the danger zone.

Mayon’s prolonged activity also disrupted agricultural practices in Albay, forcing farmers to abandon restricted farmlands and halting planting and harvesting, which threatened both income and food supply.

In response, government agencies rolled out livelihood training programs to help displaced farmers sustain themselves while awaiting safer conditions.
