When a student fails an assessment in a difficult topic, their capability is questioned. However, when will it ever come to us that sometimes, it isn’t the learner’s fault, but the teacher’s inefficient way of inculcating the lesson in hand?

Learning isn’t just about reading textbooks or listening to boring lectures, it’s about finding effective ways to instill knowledge into our minds. Just like a poster that has meanings for every symbol, color, and strokes, learning should also be associated with vibrant, engaging, and creative techniques in learning.

Science tells us that using engaging, colorful, and creative-bound additives in our lectures can help learners to easily catch on a difficult lesson. By using simpler and common examples, a student’s lazy mind can still understand even the hardest lessons.

Color boosts memory retention

In a recent discovery, a broader review of color in learning materials for graduate students observed that color influences attention, retention, and memory performance—implying instructional materials designed with color in mind can improve learning outcomes.

Color affects attention, mood, and engagement

A 2025 study of real classrooms in secondary schools showed that students in cool-colored classrooms such as blue, violet, and green scored higher on attention measures rather than students in warm-colored rooms such as red, yellow, and orange or neutral settings.

Color-coding as a deliberate “learning aid” — not just decoration

A recent study (in 2024) examined the use of color-coding in teaching a challenging physics topic (introductory mechanics). Many students reported that color-coded slides helped them link related information much easier, namely: variables, diagrams, definitions; and distinguish different concepts—improving clarity and comprehension.

Science is truly magical — especially when paired with the essence of learning, enabling the human minds to think about numerous ways to effectively nurture the youth’s intellectual capability. As they say, learning without guidance is never learning, it’s forcefully instilling terminologies inside our mind—teachers should not teach plain terms in bland output, they should teach with color and creativity.
