Naga has become the Philippines’ 34th highly urbanized city (HUC) after meeting the prescribed annual income and population threshold, Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo revealed on Wednesday, May 27.
Marking the 68th birth anniversary of late Mayor Jesse Robredo, the former vice president announced that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Naga’s HUC proclamation, following the bid initiation through Sangguniang Panlungsod Resolution No. 2026-078 in January.
In an interview from BicoldotPH, Robredo noted that this implies a possible investment surge in the city.
“…Ang mga negosyo pirming inot niyang criteria [kung] sisay si mga highly urbanized. Dahil ang gustong sabihin kaniyo, active ang trade and commerce,” Robredo said.
(Businesses always prioritize highly urbanized areas because this means that their trade and commerce are active.)
She further disclosed that Naga City may also be entitled to its own legislative district when in HUC status, but claimed there is “no need for it right now.”
Before it is finalized, however, Robredo said that Nagueños must still approve the status in a plebiscite to be held in the next 120 days.
HUCs are cities with a minimum population of 200,000 and latest annual income of 50 million pesos. Among the areas classified as such are Pasig and Quezon City in Metro Manila.
