Kanlaon Volcano's moderately explosive eruption on Thursday, July 9, sent ash drifting into parts of Cebu, prompting several local governments to suspend classes and government work.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the eruption occurred at the summit crater at 7:33 a.m., lasted about three minutes based on seismic and infrasound data, and produced a dark gray ash plume that rose two to three kilometers before drifting eastward.
Poorly visible pyroclastic density currents descending the volcano's southeastern slopes, possibly within one kilometer of the summit crater, were also observed, the agency said.
“Tungod sa mas mikusog nga southwest monsoon (Habagat) nga gipakusog sa tropical cyclone, nga mahimong hinungdan sa padayon nga pag-ulan, ug sa padayon usab nga epekto sa volcanic ashfall, ang atong city government has already intensified its preparedness and response efforts,” Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said in a social media post.
(Due to the stronger southwest monsoon (Habagat), intensified by the tropical cyclone, which may cause continuous rainfall, and the continuing effects of volcanic ashfall, the city government has already strengthened its preparedness and response efforts.)
He added that response teams remain on standby to address ash accumulation and other health and safety concerns across the city.
State volcanologists continue to enforce the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around the crater due to the risk of ballistic projectiles, rockfalls, and further ashfall.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, and no injuries or casualties have been reported.
Strong winds carried volcanic ash across parts of Cebu, reducing visibility and coating roads and rooftops with fine black particles.
The Cebu Provincial Government’s Public Information Office confirmed ashfall in Toledo City, Pinamungajan, and Aloguinsan.
The cities of Toledo, Talisay, Lapu-Lapu, and Cebu City suspended classes, while Toledo also halted government work, except for essential and emergency services.
Authorities urged residents to remain indoors, wear face masks when going outside, keep windows and doors closed, and cover water sources. They also warned that volcanic ash poses greater health risks to children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor Kanlaon’s seismic activity, sulfur dioxide emissions, and ground deformation for signs of further volcanic unrest.
Meanwhile, local disaster risk reduction and management offices are coordinating with barangays to assess the extent of ashfall and determine whether additional areas have been affected.
