NEWS | Gen Z Filipinos with strongest support for Sara Duterte’s impeachment - OCTA survey

Younger Filipinos aged 18 to 24 topped the recent OCTA Research’s Tugon ng Masa (TNM) survey, conducted on March 19 to 25, signifying high support for an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte

Released on Wednesday, majority of the 69% who believed that VP Sara should stand trial for the allegations filed against her were part of the generation Z, totalling to 77%.

“I think kaya damo an naga favor for the impeachment trial because aware sinda san mga crimes na gina pan himo niya like idton confidential funds, idton isang kaibigan na scandal, and idton paga pang curse out niya sa mga politicians and since most of the Gen Z is pirme online, majority of them are bound to see the truth,” Jasper Arizala, 18, explained.

(I think many favor the impeachment trial because they’re aware of her crimes like the confidential funds, the “Isang Kaibigan” scandal, and her cursing out politicians. Since most of Gen Z are chronically online, [the] majority of them are bound to see the truth.)

Arizala also described Duterte as “unstable” and “deluded” to continue her run within the government citing multiple failed attempts to provide the bare minimum to the people.

Filipinos aged 35 to 44 also expressed strong support for Duterte’s impeachment trial at 73% while lower support was observed in those aged 45 to 54 at 60%.

The survey was answered by 1 200 adult respondents across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Based on the survey, “Across major geographic areas, support for an impeachment trial is highest in the Visayas (83%) and the National Capital Region (81%), followed by Balance Luzon (69%).”

Mindanao garnered the lowest support for the trial at 61% and continues to maintain its long-standing support for the Duterte clan with its opposition against the trial at 38%, the highest in all islands of the country.

As of February 2025, Sara Duterte becomes the first vice president since the Philippines gained independence to be impeached with 240 lawmakers backing the allegations filed against her.

Four impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte, listing seven main articles of impeachment with legislators pointing out her death threats against the president, the first lady, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez in November 2024.

“The absolute atrocity of these words cannot be mollified by the convenient excuse that these are mere threats akin to warnings. They tantamount to high crimes, and/or betrayal of public trust, and/or culpable violations of the 1987 Constitution,” cited the complaint.

Due to her alleged involvement in corrupt activities and threats thrown against the Marcos government, Duterte’s disapproval rating rose by double-digits from 16% in March 2025 to 27% in March 2026 while distrust against her also increased from 16% in to 26%, as per the latest Pulse Asia Survey.

Despite the steady decline in public trust, Sara Duterte still expressed her desire to run for presidency in the 2028 National Elections.

“I wholeheartedly believe na we should vote for someone who knows what to do and handle these problems,” Arizala said.
