Russia launched a barrage of missiles and drones across Ukraine early Tuesday, killing four people and hitting energy infrastructure, further straining the country’s power system during winter.
The attack focused heavily on eastern and central regions, including Kharkiv and areas near Kyiv, where authorities reported casualties, power outages, and damage to key facilities.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, “several hundred thousand” households near Kyiv were left without electricity following the strikes.
“The world can respond to his Russian terror with new assistance packages for Ukraine,” Zelensky said in a post on social media.
Authorities in Kyiv and surrounding areas imposed emergency power cuts in the hours after the attack, saying freezing temperatures were complicating restoration efforts.
Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, DTEK, said Russian forces struck one of its power plants, making the eighth such attack on its facilities since October.
The Ukrainian air force said the overnight bombardment included 25 missiles and 247 drones.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said six people were wounded in an attack outside the city of Kharkiv.
In the city itself, Mayor Igor Terekhov said a Russian long-range drone struck a children’s medical facility, causing a fire but no casualties.
Other regions, including the southern city of Odessa, were also hit, with residential buildings, a hospital, and a kindergarten damaged and at least five people wounded, according to the regional officials.
The strikes followed Russia’s use last week of nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missiles, which Washington called a “dangerous and inexplicable escalation” of the war.
Moscow said the missile targeted an aviation repair factory in the Lviv region, a claim denied by Kyiv.
