Malacañang threatened prosecution for parties circulating “energy lockdown” rumors amid rising fuel costs and geopolitical instability.
Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez on Sunday, April 5 stated the government will not tolerate fabricated reports linking supposed lockdowns to fuel shortages or new COVID-19 variants. “In light of the current energy landscape, we warn anyone who deliberately fabricates stories and spreads fake news online to exploit situations that they will be held to account to the fullest extent of law,” Gomez said.
Any attempt to mislead the public about energy security, supply, or pricing to sow confusion will be treated as a serious offense. Gomez reminded social media users that publishing false information is punishable under Revised Penal Code, carrying up to six months in prison. Penalties may increase to one year under Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 if committed online.
Malacañang emphasized that disinformation during an energy emergency undermines public trust, disrupts markets, and threatens the welfare of Filipinos. Gomez noted “zero tolerance” for those maliciously committing these acts to advance personal or political interests.
Anti-fake news desk, formed in coordination with the Department of Justice, prepares to file cases against individuals who flagrantly disseminate deceptive information.
Philippine National Police Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. Confirmed on Monday that police will pursue criminal charges, directing units to debunk false claims and monitor online platforms for disinformation campaigns.
Authorities urged citizens to verify information through official government channels before sharing, especially as global oil market volatility continues. Investigation targets social media posts during Holy Week that falsely claimed “energy lockdown starting April 20, 2026” and urged citizens to stockpile supplies.
