The Department of Education aims to start trimester classes next school year in elementary and high school ‘to improve the quality of education’, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said in a press release on Friday, February 13.
As part of the holistic approach, DepEd aims to reform the calendar to ensure proper distribution in academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
As the secretary cites the findings of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), this will lessen the administrative burden of the teachers, improve the pace of learning and avoid uninterrupted lessons which will improve the quality of education.
Under the trimester system, the school year 2026-2027 will be cut into three academic terms with breaks in between to give time for teachers to plan for lessons, analyze outputs and professional tasks that will lead to effective learning.
The proposed academic calendar consists of 201 days, where the first term starts in July and all the way September, the second term runs from September to December and the last term goes from January and ends in March.
Each term will have an 'instructional block' that is for ongoing teaching with few interruption from co-curricular activities.
In addition, enrichment blocks will be added for remedial classes, computation of grades, wellness break and preparation of school forms.
